A Journey with Leica and Lucas Lenci
Photographer Lucas Lenci (LOBA 2024 shortlist) presents a short film where he speaks about his experiences in Wetzlar, and shares stories about a Leica and his grandfather.
Brazilian photographer Lucas Lenci’s Inattention Era series earned him a place on the LOBA 2024 shortlist. He travelled to Wetzlar to participate in the opening of the LOBA exhibition at the Ernst Leitz Museum and the Celebration of Photography in October 2024. During his visit, he researched the story of his grandfather Peter Scheier’s (1908–1979) Leica III. Peter had emigrated to Brazil at the end of the 1930s; the Leica that he had purchased in 1938 was in his baggage. In the early 1940s, he set up his own photo studio in São Paulo. He worked as a commercial and architecture photographer, and over the decades documented the most diverse subjects. His children Thomas and Bettina also went on to become professional photographers.
The Leica III moved on to Lenci’s uncle, before finally passing into Lenci’s own hands. Today, as a successful photographer, Lenci works primarily with digital technology. However, he has a very personal relationship with analogue photography, as he uses a Leica M6 to primarily photograph his family.
In this film, Lenci presents his series at the LOBA exhibition and speaks about his experiences during his visit to Wetzlar.
