Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Klaus Kehrer studied at the University of Mannheim, Germany, and worked with a South German printing and publishing house. After designing and developing photography and art books for several years, he founded Kehrer Verlag, based in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1995. Today it is a renowned international publishing house with a team of around 20 employees. With its in-house retouchers and designers, Kehrer Publishing focuses on the design, production and international distribution of fine art photography books. Its authors have included leading photographers such as Christopher Anderson, Harry Callahan, Helen Levitt, Ishiuchi Miyako, Saul Leiter, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Sarah Moon, Thomas Ruff, Pentti Sammallahti, Stephen Shore, and Jeffrey Silverthorne, as well as numerous emerging artists.
Klaus Kehrer is a member of various juries evaluating photography and photography books. He conducts workshops on book design and photo book marketing, and enjoys discovering young and aspiring photographers as a reviewer at international photography festivals.
